LG Nitro HD Review

LG Nitro HD from AT&T wireless comes in some heavy expectations. The phone with AH-IPS screen has been designed to give superior viewing experience to users. The phone joins the competition with Samsung Galaxy S II Skyrocket and HTC Vivid. Nitro HD is the first device in AT&T’s impressive line of smartphones which features an HD screen. Check out our LG Nitro HD review to know whether the phone meets the expectation of users or not.

LG Nitro HD Case and Design

Nitro HD is fairly a simple phone whose rounded corners and black strip of aluminum surrounding the bezel gives it an elegant look. The phone is made out of plastic but the thanks to the textured finish jet-black black, the phone is quite easy to grip. The phone is fairly large measuring 133.9 x 67.8 x 10.4mm and weighs 127 grams. This phone is quite light than HTC Vivid and iPhone 4S which weighs a 176 and 140 grams respectively. The phone feels quite robust and durable, thanks to the high quality materials used in its construction. Nitro HD is a great phone in terms of looks, design and quality.

LG Nitro HD Display

The screen of Nitro HD is one of the best we have seen in recent times. It has the distinction of being the first Android handset on AT&T which displays pictures of 1280×720 pixels. The screen is quite big measuring 4.5 inches and though we have seen 720p displays on HTC Rezound and Galaxy Nexus, the display of Nitro HD is different because it is equipped with an IPS panel which offers nice balance between brightness and color. The pixel density is quite reasonable and it is very much similar to iPhone 4S.
The viewing angles are great are so is the sunlight legibility. But when it comes to contrast, it is not at par with Super AMOLED plus screen of Samsung.  Since the screen is quite big, hence it is ideal for reading ebooks and watching Youtube videos. There are three touch sensitive buttons below the screen and above the screen lies the earpiece, ambient light and proximity sensors. On the left side of the display you get the volume rocker button while the right side is completely blank.

LG Nitro HD Features

When consumers purchase smartphones, normally they look out for striking features of the phone. Let us check out some impressive features of Nitro HD

Software and UI

Nitro HD runs on Android 2.3.5 Gingerbread and we were quite impressed by the lock screen which displays notifications of missed called and received messages. The lock screen is quite simple and the number of home screen panes ranges from 1 to 7. Gestures are also nice features of Nitro HD. The Gesture UI covers things like turn-to-mute and turn-to-snooze etc.

Processor

With a dual-core 1.5GHz Scorpion processor and 1GB of RAM, operations in the phone are quite snappy and watching HD movie trailers and playing games is a delight on the phone.

Apps

The phone is equipped with several pre-installed apps such as
  • Mog Music
  • Amazon
  • Facebook
  • Twitter
  • YP Mobile
  • MyAT&T
  • Code Scanner
  • Family Tracker

Keyboard

Nitro HD comes with a couple of keyboards. One keyboard is the stock Android keyboard while the other one is from LG. The keyboard from LG offered larger keys, both in portrait and in landscape mode as well as several short cuts.

Phonebook and Messaging

The phonebook displays all contacts in alphabetical order and each contact is displayed with a photo and name. One can view a single contact using a tabbed interface. The phone is quite capable of handling all sorts of messaging at ease. Be it SMS, MMS or emails users will be easily able to execute them. The spacious layout of the keyboard makes it quite easy to type messages and mails.

LG Nitro HD Camera and Video Quality

Nitro HD is packed with 8MP camera and an LED flash. The interface of the camera is quite simple and we were a bit disappointed to find out that the camera does not have a dedicated camera button. It is however, equipped with features such as geo-tagging and touch focus. The camera of Nitro HD performs well and the images shot were quite good. The images captured showed nice amount of details.
The only major drawback in shots was the relatively high level of noise during daylight. In dim light, the single LED flash helps to click some nice photos. Nitro HD is capable of recording full HD videos. The phone is capable of recording both 720p and 1080p videos. The videos captured were smooth and offered plenty of details.

LG Nitro HD Connectivity

Nitro HD offers a full set of connectivity options. You get quad-band GSM/GPRS/EDGE and tri-band HSDPA. 4G LTE support is the greatest connectivity feature of Nitro HD.

Wireless Connectivity

Wireless connectivity in the phone is supported by Bluetooth 3.0, Wi-Fi b/g/n, DLNA and hotspot capabilities. With smartshare application you can control DLNA network.

NFC

We were a bit disappointed that the phone does not support NFC.
The web browser of the phone performed quite well and it loaded web pages pretty quickly. It took us just under 3 seconds to load feelandroid.com

LG Nitro HD Multimedia

The media player of Nitro HD is very straightforward. All the songs are placed into the playlist and they are arranged in order as defined by the user. The video player is quite good and it stores all the videos in order. It handled every video file thrown at it with ease.

LG Nitro HD Call Quality

Call quality with Nitro HD is quite decent. It offered clear and loud calls and we did not witness any drop in calls even in crowded areas.

LG Nitro HD Retail Package

During unboxing Nitro HD, we found the phone to be equipped with the following stuffs
  • LG Nitro HD
  • microUSB cable
  • Charger
  • User Manual

LG Nitro HD Battery Life

Battery life is quite decent with Nitro HD. In our battery test, the battery of Nitro HD lasted for approximately 4 hours.

LG Nitro HD Price

Nitro HD price in USA is approximately $ 250 while the price of the phone in India is not yet known.
Nitro HD is truly a fabulous phone which boasts of brighter and sharper screen and impressive features. If you are looking for a blazing fast 4G LTE phone, then Nitro HD is just the right phone for you.
